El quinto hijo by Doris Lessing (2 star ratings)
Housewife stuff if you were really angry about the sexual revolution. L’ho trovata tuttavia un po’ troppo sbrigativa nel pennellare quegli stessi personaggi: It felt like a gothic tale of horror though unfulfilled and mixed with some satire before Ben’s arrival.
However, given the deplorable character construction of the Lovatts the message dris behind in what was Lessing’s ultimate intent. Family and friends descend at Christmas, Easter and the summer quitno filling the house with happiness.
Cookies come in two flavours – persistent and transient. I’m giving it three stars because it’s a light reading, that’s for sure, but I feel I could have spent my time reading more interesting books. Lessing asks that hard questions in this novel: Some of their later actions further prove how far they were willing to go in order to have their “perfect lives” again, which left me kind of shocked. The family should have been more complex. This book is not yet featured on Listopia.
Premio Grinzane Cavour for Narrativa Straniera She wants to disturb you. Later, Ben goes to school, but he is one of those uneducatables, the misfits of society who float up through the school system until they graduate illiterate and unchanged.

What follows is the slow, painful descent into a plot consisting of nothing. When the lessinb date is reached your computer deletes the cookie.
Harriet begs to be induced at 8 months.
The plan works up to Child 4, Paul. The Fifth Child 2 books. I felt as if the whole thing was going on in the Middle Ages.

This is a truly terrifying book to read as a parent. Nothing else can be said for anyone else. Maybe that kind of heartless removal speaks to others in a societal morse code I can’t understand.

They weren’t a family at all. She was on the shortlist for the first Man Booker International Prize in So that was good. I threw this book in the actual trash so I wouldn’t be responsible for anyone else picking it up. Harriet may be a woman too weak to be good enough for a child like Ben.
I’d like to add an additional note because it struck me while reading this book that it could be seen as deeply problematic with regards to disabled and special needs children. As he grows older and more terrifying, Harriet finds she cannot love him, David cannot bring himself to touch him, and their four older children are afraid of him. The question raised by the book is this:
