A Note to the Western Reader Introduction: Many times in the text, Mernissi writes “I will now examine a topic ” yet at the end of the section, I didn’t feel that she had. I read an earlier book by Mernissi which was very impressionistic and male-focused. I wish Mernissi had more fully explored the mrnissi of Freud’s passive view of the feminine as it contrasts with the propensity in Islam to deal with the more active feminine sexuality through overt repression. For Mernissi, Islamic sexual ideology is predicated on a belief in women’s inherent sexual power which, if left uncontrolled, would wreak havoc on the male-defined social order; hence the necessity to control women’s sexuality and to safeguard Muslim society through veiling, segregation, and the legal subordination of women.
